Mission Statement
It is the mission of the ¸Û°Äͼ¿â RMH School of Medical Laboratory Science to graduate beginning Medical Laboratory Scientists with the skills, knowledge, motivation and insight to excel in the practice of laboratory medicine and to pass national certification examinations. These graduates will be motivated to continue their education and to become our future educators, leaders, innovators and managers in the laboratory. The School will remain on the cutting edge of laboratory education, providing the students with a curriculum that is current and responsive to the dynamic healthcare environment.
The School of Medical Laboratory Science has been training Medical Laboratory Scientists since 1968. The school offers students the opportunity to enter a challenging and highly technical career within the health care industry. Graduates find employment in hospital, private or government laboratories, in research institutions, medical supply companies, and private physician practices. Many graduates are serving as leaders at medical laboratories across the country. Some have chosen to continue their education to become physicians, physician assistants, dentists, molecular specialists, IT managers.
¸Û°Äͼ¿â RMH Medical Center was founded in 1912 and is located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The hospital is a not-for-profit institution that is fully accredited by DNV and is a community-based regional healthcare facility licensed for 266 beds. In 2010, SRMH joined ¸Û°Äͼ¿â.
The School of Medical Laboratory Science offers both in-person and online options for learning.
In-person: The School of MLS admits up to twelve students to the in-person program starting each January and June. The program includes six months of lecture and student labs at the school facility in Harrisonburg, VA., followed by six months of rotation through all departments in the clinical laboratory. Clinical rotation sites include ¸Û°Äͼ¿â RMH Medical Center, ¸Û°Äͼ¿â Halifax Regional Hospital, ¸Û°Äͼ¿â Martha Jefferson Hospital, ¸Û°Äͼ¿â Norfolk General Hospital, and ¸Û°Äͼ¿â Northern Virginia Medical Center.
Online: The School of MLS admits up to ten students to the online program starting each June. The program includes 12 months of asynchronous, online learning of didactic material followed by six months of rotation through all departments in the clinical laboratory. Clinical rotation sites for online students are offered at ¸Û°Äͼ¿â hospitals in the Hampton-Roads region of Virginia.
