PBT 105 Circulatory System
Lecture and student laboratory include the structure and function of the circulatory system. Topics include the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries. The composition and function of the blood are included with types of blood (venous, capillary, arterial), plasma, serum, and cellular elements (RBC, WBC, platelets). Medical Terminology is included.
PBT 107 Specimen Collection, Handling, Transport, and Processing
Lecture and student laboratory include the collection of venipuncture and skin puncture. Topics include review and clarification of orders, patient communication (pre and post collection), patient identification, patient assessment and preparation, site selection, techniques, common tests, order of draw (venous and capillary), complications, equipment (tubes, anticoagulant, needles, tourniquet, lancets, syringes, vein viewers), and medical terminology. Additional topics include specimen types and suitability, routine specimens, unusual specimen types, newborn screening, chain of custody specimens, assess specimen quality, transport and storage, and equipment (e.g., centrifuge).
PBT 109 Waived and Point-of-Care Testing
Lecture and student laboratory include waived and point-of-care testing with regard to urinalysis, hemoglobin and hematocrit, coagulation (e.g., PT/INR), glucose, kit tests such as strep screen, rapid flu test, and pregnancy, performance and operations, and medical terminology.
PBT 111 Non-Blood Specimens
Lecture and student laboratory include non-blood specimens such as urine, CSF, breath, stool, nasal/nasopharyngeal, with a focus on the physiology, patient preparation, patient collection, processing and handling, and medical terminology for each type of specimen.
PBT 408 Clinical Laboratory Supervision and Management
Lecture and student laboratory include the operation of a laboratory with topics that focus on quality control (techniques and equipment), quality improvement, interpersonal relations such as age-specific communication, Americans with Disabilities Act, professional ethics, and regulatory agencies such as OSHA, CLSI, CDC, and CLIA. Additional topics that are included are safety of the patient, personal ( PPE, Standard Precautions), equipment, laboratory, and hospital safety such as fire and chemical safety. This course includes infection control, isolation techniques, disposal of contaminated equipment, and hand hygiene. Additional topics are coding/billing, patient confidentiality (HIPAA), and appropriate medical terminology.
PBT 408 Practicum (Clinical Rotation)
The practicum course includes clinical training of 8 weeks rotation in a drawing site of the ¸Û°Äͼ¿â RMH Medical Center or the ¸Û°Äͼ¿â Martha Jefferson Hospital accredited laboratories. This includes 325 clock hours of clinical training and orientation in an accredited laboratory with a minimum required performance of 110 successful unaided blood collections including venipunctures and skin punctures. During rotation, clinical application is made of the following topics to include the circulatory system, specimen collection, handling, transport, and processing of specimens, waived and Point-of-Care Testing, non-blood specimens and clinical laboratory supervision.
